... remembrance day ...
I was born a short time after World War II ended.
This period always makes me a little bit down. I grew up with people that had been damaged by the war - some physically and many mentally. Most who went through the war do not talk about it or you just get fragments in conversations.
My mother describing how a bomb landed near a cinema, where she was watching a film and how she had to walk home through the shattered glass. She described another time when a fighter plane machine gunned people walking in one of Bournemouth's parks.
I remember working with a guy, who was withdrawn, and you could see from the redness of his face that he drunk quite a bit. One day he just started talking about how as a sergeant in Italy he had to detail groups of men to clear out defenders in a village. He said it was almost mathematical 6 of his unit would go in and only 4 would come out. He said you just had to forget that these were men you had trained and knew or you could not do the job.
I feel bad this year as it looks inevitable that British and American troops will loose their lives in Iraq in the near future. I feel bad to for the Iraqi people who will also suffer. The result of the war will not improve their lives and could actually make things worse for them as I see warlords taking over sections of the country.
