... two for brew ...

I went to see the excellent performance of Two at the Mary Wallace Theatre, Twickenham tonight.

The play was set in a pub and opened with the bar owner and his wife serving drinks to imaginary customers. They served, they talked, they joked and flirted and you quickly got a good impression of a busy pub and an idea of some of the customers. At the same time you got the impression that there was a tension between the two of them. Annoyance at the same repartee and slight awkwardness when the customers were not looking.

The two actors then played their main role and the roles of various visitors to the pub. Different characters injected humour, understanding, loneliness and unpleasantness. There was a lonely lady who slips in for a quick drink as a way of surviving from caring for her husband; an over the top ladies man, with gold chain, bad chat and his put apon girlfriend; the bossy woman who liked her men big, but had married a very timid man who had difficulty getting served at the bar and the abused wife of the vicious, but two faced bully.

Through this the tension grew between the manager and his wife. We did not know until the end why the date was significant. She drunk and he got more withdrawn. In the last couple of scenes the reason was explained in a very emotional exchange. I will not tell you what the reason was as it will spoil the play for you.

Brilliantly acted. Go if you can
