In the mail box
I thought this was a bad taste spoof. I was expecting some joke, such as bar coding your child's head. However it is serious...
With all the kidnappings in the news these days, I decided to do something to keep my children safe.
I got a Child ID kit that I saw on the Nightly News.
This kit includes a child ID card, that the parent should carry, to give to the police if the child disappears; an information pack, held at home, which includes bags for hair, for dna, and copies of detal records; and labels to put in the child's shoes.
The advert states that in America 2,100 children are reported missing every day. This is probably true, however the vast majority of these children will have just got lost and will be found within a couple of hours.
In Britain a person plans to tag their child and I was not suprised to see that there is an actual company that will be selling a tagging service from November. Where ever the child is their location can be monitored for £10 per month.
I am concerned the way things are going. Although tragic, the incidence of attacks by strangers is extremely rare. Most attacks, most paedophiles are within the family or are so called friends of the family. Kidnapping or murder of cgildren is exremely rare, which is why the incidents are so news worthy.
A couple of years ago I was waiting for a friend on Euston Station. A boy about 8 was in tears. He had got lost. Years ago I would have held his hand and then taken him to some railway official. He had obviously been taught to be wary of strangers and so standing about 10 feet away from him I directed him to a uniformed ticket collector, who looked completely cheesed off at being asked to look after him.
It really depresses me to see how isolated we are becoming from each other.
